Innovative Pilot-Scale High Temp Melt System Replaces “Black Art” with Science;
Enables Process Optimization and Enhanced Profitability

The MeltMizer™ is an innovative pilot-scale high temperature melting system that addresses a critical need in the glass, ceramic and refractory industries to replace “black art” with science. It offers an unprecedented selection of real process conditions and melt configurations, enabling a methodical means of evaluating and optimizing both existing and developmental melt processes. This analytical approach provides an understanding of melt characteristics and processes – offering opportunities for enhanced profitability from existing processes, less costly evaluation of R&D concepts, and cost-effective small scale production of new products.

The Melt Mizer™ is a multi-faceted electric furnace with requisite ancillary equipment, and offers a host of variable conditions which allow up to 90 different configurations. Variations can be made to the power supply (AC or DC), mode of regulation (voltage, current, KW or impedance), input voltage (240V@ reduced capacity or 480V@full capacity), melting method (open arc or submerged resistance), and discharge port (bottom or side).

The system can be readily configured and reconfigured to test a variety of conditions, providing a practical “design of experiments” approach. This combination of variations in set-up and data acquisition on a real time basis offers a means of evaluating a broad range of process conditions, thereby enabling the review and improvement of process efficiencies and quality, based on scientific data.

The MeltMizer™ is the result of a three year development program designed to provide a common sense approach to the art of melting. The system includes a Melter/Electrode Positioner, Power Regulating Supply, Operator's Console/Data Acquisition System, Distribution/Control Center, Water Cooling System and Dust Collecting System and is
fully operated by one person. The entire system is arranged on a trailer for ease of mobility.

For commercial applications, the MeltMizer™ can be configured for any number of operational conditions without interrupting existing production. The data collected during such pilot-scale melts and the ability to reassess the process to make further refinements, results in production improvements, enhanced product quality and better power utilization.

For R&D applications, the MeltMizer™ system enables product development teams to evaluate and optimize new high temperature melt processes at the pilot scale prior to finalizing design and expenditures for full scale implementation. For small or intermediate volumes of existing or new products, management teams can satisfy product expectations by using the MeltMizer™ as a small scale production facility. This effectively decreases time-to-market for new products, validates market need for new
products prior to full-scale expenditures, and reduces costs associated with the early stages of commercialization.

Other applications for the MeltMizer™ include its use in the evaluation, processing and vitrification of hazardous wastes in the environmental arena, such as asbestos, contaminated soils/clays and low level radioactive wastes.

The MeltMizer™ is available as a turn-key unit, or can be accessed via leasing/contract service arrangement. The MeltMizer™ can also be custom-designed and built in order to meet customer-specific requirements. High temperature melt process consulting services are also available from the company.
